Delicious Matcha Latte Recipe

I became obsessed with matcha ever since the moment I stepped into a small, tucked-away tea shop during my first visit to Japan.

The deep green color and earthy aroma were so captivating, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked.

I’ve tried matcha in every form I could get my hands on—ice cream, pastries, smoothies—but nothing compares to the comfort of a homemade matcha latte recipe.

I love how the slight bitterness of the matcha blends with the creamy, slightly sweet coconut milk, creating a perfectly balanced drink.

And unlike the overly sugary versions at coffee shops, making it at home lets me control the sweetness and enjoy the true, vibrant taste of matcha.

Now, making a matcha latte is like my daily ritual, bringing back that first taste of Japan with each sip.

What is Matcha?

Matcha powder comes from finely ground green tea leaves.

Unlike steeped green tea, where only the infused water is consumed, drinking a matcha latte means you’re getting the entire tea leaf and all its benefits.

Because of this, matcha has around ten times the nutrients of regular green tea! (Curious about more matcha benefits? Click here.)

But, honestly, we love it most for its unique taste!

Matcha has a slightly bitter, earthy flavor that pairs wonderfully with sweet treats like smoothies, ice cream, milkshakes, frosting, and even doughnuts!

How to Make a Matcha Latte?

This matcha latte recipe is incredibly simple.

With just three main ingredients (plus a touch of sweetener if you like), there’s no need for special barista skills or equipment.

If you’re planning to make this often, you might consider investing in a traditional (and adorable) matcha whisk, but a regular small whisk or milk frother will work just as well.

Here’s how to make it:

Different Types of Matcha

Did you know there are different types of matcha? That’s right! The two most common varieties are ceremonial and culinary grade.

  • Ceremonial Grade: It is of the finest quality, made from young matcha leaves. It’s naturally sweet, mild, and packed with nutrients, which is why it’s traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies and enjoyed simply with water.

  • Culinary Grade: On the other hand, has a bolder, slightly more bitter taste, with a touch of astringency. It’s also more affordable, making it ideal for blended drinks or baking, where other ingredients help mellow out its flavor.

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ to 1 teaspoon matcha powder

  • ¼ cup hot water (Make sure to use hot water. This will help break up the matcha powder as you whisk it)

  • ¼ cup hot milk,  You can use any dairy or non-dairy milk (such as coconut milk, almond milk, cashew milk, or oat milk). Just warm it up and froth

  • Sweetener: Matcha has a grassy, earthy flavor, so I enjoy adding a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. Of course, you can use any sweetener you prefer!

RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Start by sifting your matcha powder. It clumps easily, and the clumps can be difficult to whisk away, so this step will help make your matcha latte recipe smooth, creamy & lump-free.

2. Add the matcha to a mug, and pour in hot, freshly boiled water over it. Whisk vigorously until the matcha green tea powder is completely dissolved. Use an up-and-down or side-to-side motion with the whisk instead of the typical circular motion to create foam in your matcha.

3. Pour the warmed coconut milk over the foamy water (almond milk is good too!) and whisk again to froth the milk.

4. Taste your latte and decide how much sweetener you want to add, if any. I like mine with a drop of maple syrup.
